Maybe I'm just ignorant...

I went HERE
today and read what this guy did over his weekend. Now I know I'll probably never agree with this man's ideas on how life should be. Some of what he says makes sense. I believe in hard work, having strong values and being a decent person. At the risk of sounding stupid, could someone please explain to me what he means when he says, "These boys are the fine examples of clean cut young professionals that live and work in the Research Triangle Area. They both drive big gas guzzling SUV's , a Blazer and a Yukon, and tell me that they are on the road to work and back at least 3 hours each day, sometimes four! I congratulated them on their understanding of the Peak Oil nonsense and encouraged them to move further out so their commutes would be longer!"? I guess I don't get it...so if someone more intelligent than I could explain to me the principal behind this, I would be much obliged.

I think what he was trying to say was that the main reason there is a fuel crises right now is due to a lack of rening capability-not due to a lack of crude oil. The peak oil thing has been going on for decades-I remember it when I was a kid but more oil was found and produced when the price made it worth while just as it is now. The crude oil and natural gas are available at a price-by some estimates there is enough domestic natural gas to satisfy all of our energy needs for the next 200 years. But drilling for it and building the pipelines and refineries is not cost effective right now. It takes years just to get a permit because of enviro-nuts blocking the permits in court. There is oli that could be drilled for and produced in many places in the USA but with enviromental regs being what they are it is not worth it.

Driving SUVs does use more fuel. But the net gain by everyone swtching to a small gasoline vehicle is minimal overall. The biggest users of petroleum products are power plants, aircraft, ships, trains, and heavy industry. The call for condeminng those driving SUVs is from the socialist left and has more to do with wanting everyone to be equal than it does saving fuel. Mostly, it is just another way the left wants to control your life choices.
